New Law Could Order Addicts to Join Drug Rehab Centers in Alabama
A woman named JoAnn Hendrix from Jasper, Alabama is trying to get a new state law passed that requires addicts to join involuntary drug rehab programs on behalf of petitions initiated by family members. The law, which will be called Jamie’s Law if passed, can help addicts who are unable to recognize their need for treatment due to mental impairment caused by substance abuse. Jamie’s Law would allow for local addicts to join drug rehab centers in Alabama so they can become healthier and improve their relationships with family and loved ones.

Hendrix and Jamie’s Law
Jamie’s Law could lower drug abuse rates in Alabama.
Hendrix became inspired to create Jamie’s Law after the daughter of one of her close friends died from a heroin overdose. The young woman, a mother of two named Jamie, was unable to help herself or recognize her problem with addiction. Hendrix points out that many individuals who suffer from substance abuse are unable to help themselves, and that Jamie’s Law could allow these addicts to get the help they need to overcome addiction.
Hendrix’s grandson is also trying to overcome addiction, and has walked out of two heroin addiction treatment facilities after struggling with getting through withdrawal. Hendrix says involuntary drug rehab programs can prevent recovering addicts from giving up and walking out during the most difficult stages of recovery.
At this time, there is no law in Alabama that forces adults into involuntary drug rehab treatment. If passed, Jamie’s Law will be similar to Casey’s Law in Kentucky, and would force addicts to stay at drug rehab facilities if issued court-ordered petitions.
