Alabama teens engage in more risky behaviors involving tobacco, narcotics, and alcohol than teens in most other states, says analysis firm HealthGrove. Alabama’s Problem With Risky Teen Behavior

Alcohol Rehab Centers

Teens in Alabama take part in more risky substance use behaviors than most other states.

Alabama ranked #5 on the list of states where teenagers engage in the most risky behaviors. To determine which states have the highest amount of highly irresponsible teens, HealthGrove pulled data from the federal government’s High School Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

The report revealed that over 30% of Alabama teens drank alcohol within the past 30 days, and that nearly 11% of teens drove vehicles after consuming alcohol. The report also showed that over 17% of Alabama teens used marijuana within the past 30 days, and over 6% used cocaine within the same time period.

Risky teen behaviors that involve alcohol and drug use can increase the risk for serious accidents and overdoses that can lead to coma and/or death. Studies also say that youths who start consuming alcohol early on are more likely to engage in binge drinking, and more likely to develop addictions to alcohol and other substances. Irresponsible alcohol and drug use offer developmental and long-term health problems for growing teens, and can lead to problems with public safety throughout Alabama.

Addressing Addiction With Rehab Centers

Many rehab centers throughout Alabama offer treatments and programs tailored specifically to teenagers, based on age and addiction status. Teens can often benefit from counseling and therapy sessions that teach patients how to stay sober and cope in situations where alcohol and substances are available. Rehab also teaches teens how to find new, healthier interests and hobbies that replace alcohol and drug use.

Most teen rehab programs involve family counseling, which allows teens and their families to address addiction and strengthen their bonds with one another in a controlled, supervised medical setting. Family counseling helps teens and their parents communicate effectively with one another to reduce incidences that drive teens to drinking and drug use. These counseling sessions also help teens and parents cope with their emotions and address behaviors that led to alcohol and drug use in the first place.

The most ideal teen rehab centers are those that provide multiple treatments that can be tailored for each patient based on his or her unique needs. For instance, teens addicted to heroin and opioids can benefit from medication-assisted treatment at inpatient rehab centers, while teens who struggle with mild alcohol addictions may benefit more from outpatient treatments that allow them to live at home throughout treatment. An experienced treatment specialist can often provide suggestions for great teen rehab programs based on the type of addiction.
